Match Recap
Pape Gueye did the damage twice, but it was Villarreal's response after falling behind that defines this one. Carlos Dotor put Malaga in front after just 12 minutes, and for half an hour La Liga's early strugglers looked set for a rare lift in the table. Then Villarreal turned it around before the break: Alberto Moleiro leveled things in the 40th minute, and Gueye struck right on the stroke of halftime to send his side in ahead. He wasn't done, either, adding a second in the 86th minute to seal a 3-1 comeback win and put a bit of daylight between Villarreal and bottom-of-the-table trouble, even with both sides still searching for a first win of the season. Malaga, who led this game for half an hour, will feel it slip away all the more given where they sit in the standings. Two goals in one afternoon from Gueye, including the game-changer right before the interval, make this one worth watching from Dotor's opener through to that late-game exclamation point.
