Match Recap
Kristoffer Velde did it twice in six minutes, and St. Louis City never recovered. The Portland Timbers winger put his side ahead in the 42nd minute, David Da Costa doubled the lead in stoppage time before halftime, and Velde struck again three minutes into the second half to make it 3-0. That burst buried a St. Louis City side sitting third in Major League Soccer against a Portland team down in 11th, in a fixture the two clubs had split evenly over their last three meetings. Daniel Edelman pulled one back in the 58th minute, and deep into stoppage time Rafael Navarro Leal made it 3-2, turning the closing minutes nervy for the visitors. Portland held on, but St. Louis City walked away with nothing from a five-goal, back-and-forth finish. Watch Navarro Leal's 90+1 strike that almost forced an improbable comeback, and the two early Velde goals that made the whole chase necessary in the first place.
