Match Recap
Mikael Ellertsson settled this one just before the half-hour, and Genoa made it count. The Icelandic midfielder's 25th-minute strike was the only goal of a tense Serie A afternoon at home to Venezia, and it was enough to lift Genoa off the foot of the table, if only slightly. Both sides arrived in trouble: Genoa sit 17th with just four points from five games, Venezia one place lower with three, and neither's recent form, Genoa's LWLDL against Venezia's WLLLL, suggested a classic was coming. It wasn't one, but for Genoa it didn't need to be. A single early goal, defended for the remaining hour, is exactly the kind of result a struggling side needs to stop the rot. Venezia, chasing an equalizer for over 60 minutes, couldn't find a way past a Genoa side that had absolutely no intention of giving this one up. Want to see the goal that separated two sides with almost nothing between them in the table? Ellertsson's finish is waiting in the highlights below.
